The Best Way To Clean And Disinfect The Yoga Mat
You will most likely find sprayers and hand towels in every yoga studio, and more people line up to use them after class. But what exactly is in the spray bottle?
An organic disinfectant commonly used by yogis is a mixture of equal parts distilled water and white vinegar, plus tea tree oil. Tea tree oil is a time-tested antibacterial agent that can effectively kill the nasty bacteria and fungi remaining on the mat.
How to disinfect your mat
Spray the solution on both sides of the yoga mat and wipe off the solution with a towel. This can kill pathogens remaining on the surface of the mat and make it smell fresh. Both sides of the mat should be cleaned because, in the traditional rolling process, microorganisms can migrate from the dirty side to the clean side. When you roll up the mat, the side that touches the ground will be resting on top of the area where you often put your feet, hands, chest, back, and face, so spraying all surfaces of the mat is very important to prevent excess dirt and bacteria on your body.
How to clean your mat
Add warm water and a few drops of dish soap to the spray bottle. Spray this solution on the mat and scrub it vigorously with a microfiber cloth. But don't scrub too hard, because you want to keep the mat's natural stickiness. Be sure to spray and scrub the sides of it. Finally, rinse the mat with warm water and let it dry naturally.
Wash the mats with soap and water at least once a month. Although the smell of the mat is a good indicator when it needs to be cleaned, it has absorbed a lot of sweat and dirt when it starts to smoke, and the coat is with each use of your body, so insisting on cleaning once a month will ensure you the cushion will not be too bad.
Can you put your mat in the washing machine?
This is a controversial topic, but the answer depends on your mat.
We don't recommend washing the mat in a washing machine. In most cases, this will damage the mat and the washing machine, leaving you with a very expensive bill to replace both.
Can a yoga towel avoid cleaning your yoga mat?
Sometimes, the best way to minimize a problem is to prevent it from happening in the first place. Yoga towels are placed directly on top of the mats, allowing them to absorb most of the sweat and dirt instead of the mat itself. In addition, they are anti-skid and can help you not slip while practicing. Yoga towels are particularly useful when practicing hot yoga, but you will feel the benefit in any course that makes you sweat.
